NHS Mental Health First Aid training

I am passionate about improving mental health for young people. As such, I have been trained and approved by Mental Health First Aid England to deliver Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) courses.

What is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid is an educational course which teaches people how to identify, understand and help a person who may be developing a mental health issue. In the same way as we learn physical first aid, Mental Health First Aid teaches you how to recognise those crucial warning signs of mental ill health.

It is a Government recommendation that every school and college with children aged 8 years and older trains one or more members of staff in Mental Health First Aid.

I run recognised courses on Youth Mental Health First Aid in schools, colleges and youth organisations. These take place over 2 days (or 4 half days) and all staff who attend receive an MHFA certificate that qualifies them to be a nominated Mental Health First Aider within their setting. If you only have one or two staff who need to attend this training, they can join one of my open group sessions.

Interested in booking a Youth MHFA course? Please contact me for details.

Who is MHFA England?

Picture
MHFA England is the only provider of licensed Mental Health First Aid Instructor Training in England. It is a community interest company and was established in 2009 after being successfully piloted within the Department of Health. The MHFA England instructor training programme for Adult and Youth MHFA two day courses has been accredited by the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH).

Why is MHFA training important?

Training in mental health first aid for those working with young people is vital:
  • 50% of mental health issues are established by age 14 and 75% by age 24.
  • Only 1/4 of young people with a mental health issue get access to the treatment and care they need.

Youth Mental Health First Aid is a course for everyone who works or lives with young people aged 8 to 18. You can learn how to support young people's mental health, provide help in an emergency and guide them towards the appropriate support. The training provides participants with the skills and confidence to recognise the signs and symptoms of common mental health issues and effectively guide a person towards the right support.

As an approved MHFA England instructor, I can deliver Youth MHFA training courses in your community or place of work.

If you're interested in learning how to support the young people you work with, contact me to find out more or book a course.
